Dominant mutation for nystatin resistance in yeast.
In general, attempts to isolate strains of Candida albicans resistant to the commonly employed antifungicide nystatin have been unsuccessful (M. L. Littman, M. A. Pisano, and R. M. Lancaser, Antibiotics Ann. 1957-58, p. 981, 1958; C. K. J. Paniker, P. V. Kurup, and K. Indira Devi, Indian J. Med. Res. 51:846, 1963). A few strains, however, have yielded variants exhibiting threeto fourfold resist...
متن کاملSelf-induced nystatin resistance in Dictyostelium discoideum.
The cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum is normally susceptible to the action of the polyene antibiotic nystatin. We describe conditions under which transient nystatin resistance can be induced in the absence of detectable changes in sterol composition. These results suggest that nystatin plays a positive role in promoting resistance to itself.
متن کاملSkin thrush in early infancy.
Thrush is generally regarded as one of the rarer infections of the skin of the newborn and young infant, but its occurrence is probably more frequent than its recognition. The high susceptibility of the oral mucosa to Monilia albicans during the early weeks of life is well known and it would be surprising were it limited to this structure. Invasion of the alimentary tract and other internal org...
متن کاملProtoplast fusion hybrids of Candida albicans sterol mutants differing in nystatin resistance.
Intraspecific protoplast fusion, induced by polyethylene glycol and Ca2+, was carried out in various pairings between auxotrophic nystatin-sensitive, ergosterol-producing strains of Candida albicans and their nystatin-resistant, ergosterol-less mutants of different origins. Nutritionally-complemented stable heterozygous diploid hybrids were obtained, which proved to be sensitive, semi-resistant...
متن کاملNystatin-induced changes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Nystatin (5 to 10 mug/ml) was fungicidal to Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCYC 361. There was an initial rapid uptake of nystatin by the yeast cells at 30 C, the uptake being pH dependent, with a maximum at low pH values (3 to 4). Photomicrographs indicated that nystatin-treated cells became granular. The effect of growth temperature on the subsequent sensitivity of the yeast cells to nystatin was i...
